Mentoring

We believe that as academics, one of our biggest impacts is through the individuals we are lucky enough to teach, guide, and train. The Samuel Lab values mentorship and providing an environment where people from all backgrounds can thrive and grow.

Mentoring Philosophy

In the Samuel lab, we strive to create a productive and supportive lab environment in which people can thrive. We believe that the best way to achieve this is through open communication and actively engaging in relationship and team building within our group.  We are here to support each other and work together so that we can make discoveries that shape our understanding of the world around us.

How We Operate as a Team

We are kind, driven, and innovative.

  • We are Kind. Our lab is our professional family.  We set ego aside and work to support each other in and out of the lab.  We work as a team with common goals and for the common good. We also value our community and collaborate openly and often.

  • We are Driven. We are committed to our work and bring our best to the table.  We are responsible and responsive.  We are prepared and we drive toward excellence through persistence and dedication.

  • We are Creative. We bring a positive and innovative force to problem solving and do not settle for the status quo. We tackle challenges by proactively reaching out to the community and reaching within to develop new approaches to compelling questions.

Building an Inclusive Community

Our lab is dedicated to fostering a collaborative, inclusive environment where diversity of thought, background, and experience enriches our science and drives innovation. We believe that breakthrough neuroscience research emerges when people from all walks of life feel valued, supported, and empowered. Our lab welcomes members of all identities, abilities, and perspectives, and we actively seek to build a community where differences are celebrated.

In mentoring, we aim to create a space that acknowledges each person’s unique journey and aspirations. We are committed to providing equitable access to resources, fostering open communication, and supporting our lab members as they pursue their goals. Through our research, collaboration, and outreach efforts, we strive to contribute to a more inclusive scientific community and to make our field accessible and welcoming to all.
